Job Description:

The Tax Manager-North America is responsible for all tax related activities, policy, and documentation to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, local, and foreign reporting requirements. This will include tax related activities for entities operating in both the United States and Canada. Candidates without Canadian tax knowledge will still be considered as long as you are willing to and interested in learning the rules and regulations. The Tax Manager-North America position does not currently have any direct reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and file Federal, State, and local tax reports and returns, ensuring accurate and timely filing
  • Provide oversight of third-party service firms, when applicable, to ensure delivery of accurate and complete information and validation of all information on the returns prior to filing. This will include, but is not limited to, payroll tax filings, income tax filings and sales and use tax filings
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, local, and foreign tax laws, including Canadian Federal and Provincial tax laws. This includes setup of proper tax accounts in each city/state/province where the company conducts business and is required to submit a return
  • Research and resolve any Federal, State, local, and foreign tax notices that may arise
  • Effectively work with state/provincial tax auditors with ability to report findings and estimate any tax liability
  • Advise management regarding tax matters, serving as a technical resource regarding the tax implications of financial and operational decisions
  • Manage certain ancillary tax functions of the organization with the assistance of external service providers
  • Identify potential risks and develop solutions to ensure compliance
  • Inform management of developments in tax legislation that may directly or indirectly impact the business
  • Facilitate the maintenance and renewal of sales tax licenses and other required licenses and certificates
  • Solve practical problems with minimal supervision and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization may exist
  • Establish internal controls and procedures to protect the assets of the company
  • Assist in financial statement audits and various other special projects
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
    • Analytical thinker and strong communicator, capable of dealing with all levels of personnel and third parties
    • Effective at working independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to recognize and communicate opportunities for efficiencies and process improvements.
    • Extensive knowledge of tax legislation - Federal, State, local and foreign (Canadian Federal and Provincial tax legislation)
    • Understanding of the proper sue and/or issuance of tax exemption certificates for various states in the United States and/or provinces in Canada (Canada knowledge not required).
    • Ability to develop and clearly articulate tax strategies.
    • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
      Education/Experience:
      • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, taxation, finance, business, or related field required
      • Minimum of three (3) years' of progressive experience in tax required
      • Experience with Federal and multi-state and local tax (i.e., franchise tax, sales and use tax, etc.) is required
